COMPROMISING THE SANCTITY OF LIFE'
As the years continue to pass following the Roe v. Wade decision, we should all take a long, careful look at a monumental decision that has
forever changed the perspective from which Americans view the sanctity of life.
In James 1:8 the apostle writes that ‘a double minded man is unstable in all
his ways’. We live in a society today in which the mainstream liberal teaching
cries out for every woman’s ‘right to choose’ to murder her unborn child; yet,
the same liberal agenda includes an anti-war movement that claims that war is
NEVER the answer for any of mankind’s problems.
As a wartime veteran myself I will be the first to admit that war is definitely a thing to be avoided but not at any and all costs. There comes a time when the peace and safety of a nation or nations is threatened to the point that action must be taken. Do innocent people die in war? Yes, if your definition of innocent is those civilians who have no part in the cause or promotion of the conflict. However, what does the Bible say about war and innocence? In all love I submit the following passages from Ecclesiastes and Romans:
“A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace”. - Ecclesiastes 3:8
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” - Romans 3:23
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” - Romans 5:12
The Bible clearly states that there is indeed a time for war, and that it is by the greed and hardness of men’s hearts that it comes. No, war is not a desirable thing; but, it is sometimes a necessary thing. If the Bible were untrue and the words that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet saying:
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” - Jeremiah 17:9
were not right, then the idea of a Utopia in which all men everywhere can just get along would be more than just an idealistic dream. However, the Bible is clear that this is not, nor will it ever be the case apart from God Himself intervening at the last. And must this utopian society exist at the mercy of the unwanted unborn whose lives are brutally snuffed out for the mere pleasure of those irresponsible adults who conceived them in a moment of illicit pleasure? That is not idealism, but hedonism. It is that same attitude adopted by the Grecians, Romans, and numerous other ‘great’ societies that eventually led them to their own destruction.
Then, you may ask, what about those poor women who have been victims of incest and rape - I must answer biblically that while those acts are heinous and the perpetrators ought to be punished under the law, the unborn child becomes as much a victim as the unwilling mother. In such instances the ideal of compassion is, barring any severe medical complications that threaten the life of the mother, to carry the child to term and then offer that child whose life has been given to it by God Himself, to a loving family through adoption. Murdering the unwanted child, regardless of the means of conception will not change the fact that the child has in fact been conceived and is entitled to the same life as every other child conceived in the womb of his/her mother.
A national conservative talk-show host with whom I am often in agreement, made a comment a few years ago regarding voter choices with which I as a Christian must beg to differ. He contended that no single issue should be sufficient grounds for excluding any candidate from being elected to a particular office. At that time the topic of abortion was also a highly contested issue and one which many local, state, and national political candidates shied away from. However, he advised his audience that they should always look at the total package offered by each candidate and weigh the good against the bad, choosing the best possible candidate of the ones available. This is sound advice with which I am almost in agreement.
However, I submit to you that the position that anyone takes on the subject of abortion immediately and definitively reveals their heart regarding the sanctity of life. Anyone who will allow innocent, unborn children (the vast majority of whom are conceived by willful acts of promiscuity) to be victimized even up to and including the last month of a pregnancy, all for the pleasure and convenience of an irresponsible lust-seeker, has no place among the moral and civil leaders of this great nation. Self-indulgence is rampant among liberal leaders today because self-indulgent voters have placed them in office.
Time and time again I am asked how the world in general and how our nation in particular has come to such a low point in moral depravity. Every time, I send them to the same passage in scripture: 2 Tim 3:1-7. You see, 2000 years ago the Apostle Paul was already sharing with Timothy the inspired truth of the state of mankind to come that we in our high-tech twenty-first century world still seem unable to grasp. As long as there are those among us who do not fear God, there will be selfishness, desire, and lust that all result in destruction. When the time for those things befalls us, we must be ready to defend ourselves, our families, and the truth.
